Issue # 70
November-December 2001
The events of autumn have evoked this
expanded edition of Challenge. In a special supplement, Yacov Ben
Efrat traces the course of the Afghan Boomerang: it started with
America's covert support for militant Islam in Afghanistan during the 1980s.
It has come around back in the nightmare form of Osama Bin Laden, whose
reverses in the 1990s led him to a desperate miscalculation. In a related
story, Samya Nasser takes up the strange tale of Al-Jazeera. This
satellite network calls for A Thousand Bin Ladens. We add One
more, as a reminder of the genre in which Al-Jazeera excels. Two
articles discuss the local effect of the war: Michal Schwartz shows how
The International Coalition Causes Strains in the PA and Israel,
as Bush dictates: Either With Us or Against Us. Roni Ben Efrat examines
The Israeli Left, which is Betting On America's War to make
the local lion lie down with the local lamb. We also feature an encouraging
story of Israeli youth who refuse to serve in the Occupied Territories.
Dani Ben Simhon met five of 62 who have issued a Reveille for Refusers.
Finally, we publish the concluding part of Stephen Langfur's fable, Yes,
We Have No Bananas. Melvin Tucker, an Episcopalian who woke up one
morning to find himself transformed into a middle-sized Zionist, continues
his cure at a treatment center in Puerto Rico. We add a summary of Part
One. The full text is available at
