The current Intifada looks
like a national struggle, until we notice Palestinian leaders saying to
Israel, "Let your people go!" Where? "To our casino!" On closer analysis,
claims our editorial, the Intifada is anti-casino, and anti- what this
Austrian-Palestinian Temple to Mammon in Jericho stands for: globalization.
The Intifada is part of the same campaign that brought workers to the streets
throughout the world on May Day.
While their leaders worry over gaming tables, Palestinians in
the Territories Debate the Nature of the Intifada. A turn has been
made, at least verbally, toward mobilizing the masses, but Will the
People Participate? And what has become of the Palestinian Marxist
Left? We publish, in response, the first in a two-part series: The Palestinian
Bourgeoisie and the National Program.
Two globalizers, Peres and Bush, sit in the White House Blackballing
Arafat. All three are becoming irrelevant, as events spin out of control.
A fourth, PM Sharon, enjoys support from Israel's Leftist Landlords,
who are miffed with the Palestinians for not seeing things their way. He
plans to "Judaize" Galilee, while a top-brass Conference in Herzlia
recommends further ways to preserve the "Zionist and Jewish character of
the state." Speaking of racism, the Arab press is not immune either, and
now we find Flirtations with Fascism, even in the pages of the highly
influential Al Hayat.
