For Ruweida and Da'ud Sawaf and their five children nothing has changed but the weather. After four municipal expulsions, the city appears to have turned its attentions elsewhere - to the Jaffan neighborhood of Karem a-Dalak, where it plans to evict several families.
The Sawafs, meanwhile, have appealed a local court decision, in which a judge upheld actor Yosef Shiloah's eviction of them from their house. On June 15 they had a visit from well-known Palestinian actors Muhammad Bakri, Salim Dau and George Ibrahim. The Committee for Solidarity with the Sawafs continues to hold a weekly Friday vigil on Jaffa's main road, as well as a Saturday evening "parliament" for discussing the problems of housing in Jaffa.
The Committee has ongoing costs, legal and other. We wish to thank the Solidarity Fund of the Green Party in Germany for helping us cover some of them. We welcome private contributions to the campaign.
The Association of Women of the Mediterranean Region (AWMR) held its eighth annual conference in Athens during the week of May 24-30. Seventy women from eighteen countries took part. This year's topic was "The Mediterranean Environment in Women's Perspective".
The AWMR is a regional movement of women. Each year it deals with a different issue affecting millions of lives. It is committed to a progressive political solution to regional disputes. During its sessions, it allows its members to voice their political concerns on country-based conflicts.
Asma Agbarieh and Roni Ben Efrat participated in this year's conference on behalf of the ODA, expressing their outlook on the elections in Israel and on the war in the Balkans.
The conference held a public demonstration against NATO's intervention in the Balkans.
