At the height of the olive harvest, on November 14, "Sindyanna of Galilee"* invited the public to its annual "Olive Day in the Galilee". This year we worked in the field of Diab Hussein from Deir Hanna. About a hundred volunteers arrived from Jerusalem, Jaffa, Nazareth and the Galilee. From Jaffa, in particular, came a large contingent of women who study in our Mothers’ School. Many brought their children. For them this was a rare opportunity to get close to the land. While the adults were picking the olives, the children gathered those that had fallen. After a lunch of cheese and fresh olive oil, supplied by the Husseins, the participants drove to the Sindyanna warehouse in Majd al-Krum. Hadas Lahav and Umaima Khativ, Sindyanna’s coordinators, explained to them the process of storing and bottling the oil.
*Sindyanna of Galilee is a non- profit association that helps Arab farmers sell their olive oil at fair prices. Sindyanna is working to develop the oil branch for the well-being of the Arab community. |
